Gymnix Gears Up for Cup

March 5, 2009 (International Gymnast): Montreal's Gymnix Gymnastics Club will host a trio of international competitions this weekend, with varied lineups that include 13-year-old U.S. rising star Jordyn Wieber and 34-year-old Slovenian veteran Aljaz Pegan.

Gymnix, which holds an annual international invitational each spring, has expanded the competition to include a World Cup event. The first World Cup of the season features only nine women from four nations, but 39 men from 12 nations will contest the men's competition.

Isinbayeva to scale new financial heights

March 3, 2009 (China Daily): Triple Olympic gold medalist Li Ning achieved a major publicity coup in Beijing yesterday by signing pole vault queen Yelena Isinbayeva to his eponymous sportswear brand for a reported five-year deal worth $7.5 million. The legendary Chinese gymnast and highly decorated Russian athlete are now poised to scale new financial heights together after their individual feats wowed audiences during the Beijing Games last August.

President Grandi: Indication of Chinese age-cheating in Beijing

March 2, 2009 (Monsters and Critics): The president of the international gymnastics federation FIG Bruno Grandi has said that there were believable indications that China had cheated with the age of some of their gymnasts at the Beijing Olympics last year.

'There were strong indications, but I did not handle the investigation. I had to accept the official documents that I was shown at face-value, I am not a policeman or Interpol,' he told the German gymnastics magazine Leon.

Gymnast Shu Wai keen to compete again after Budapest coaching stint

February 28, 2009 (The Star): A three-month coaching stint in Hungary has whetted the appetite of former international Ng Shu Wai to rebuild his career in artistic gymnastics. And if everything falls into place, the Olympian could represent Malaysia at next year’s Commonwealth Games in India. For a start, the 23-year-old is ready to meet National Sports Council (NSC) director general Datuk Zolkples Embong to look into the possibility of returning as a national gymnast and working towards becoming a coach.

Reebok and Cirque du Soleil launch gym workout

February 25, 2009: Reebok International Ltd., the athletic footwear brand that has a heritage in women's fitness, said it is unveiling a new gym workout for women that was designed with the help of Cirque du Soleil, an entertainment company that Reebok has a partnership with.

IOC celebrates 2009 Women and Sport Awards

March 5, 2009 (Xinhua): The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Olympic Family Thursday celebrated the International Women's Day and the 2009 Women and Sport Awards. The official ceremony held at The Olympic Museum in Lausanne, awarding five women who have made tremendous contributions to strengthening the participation of women and girls in sport on an international level. President Jacques Rogge was present at the ceremony.

Kaohsiung Mayor, Chen Chu Visits Tokyo to Promote The World Games 2009 in Kaohsiung

March 5, 2009 (Antara): The Kaohsiung City Government has joined hands with the Kaohsiung Organizing Committee of the World Games 2009 to make an international announcement for the upcoming event at the Park Hyatt Tokyo hotel in Shinjuku. Mayor Chen Chu travelled on Thursday March 5th from the International harbor city in the south of Taiwan, to present a personal letter of invitation to the people of Japan.

Launch on www.olympic.org of Olympic Congress series

March 4, 2009 (IOC): With the virtual Olympic Congress completed www.olympic.org launches today its Olympic Congress series. From now on till end of September each week one story linked to the Olympic Congress will be placed on the homepage of olympic.org. The first part of this series includes stories for each one of the previous congresses. As from June each week one of the themes or sub-themes of the Congress will be highlighted accompanied with a short video illustrating activities already carried out in this field. Today’s story looks back on the first Congresses and how de Coubertin defined them.

Official: New Delhi security arrangements on track

March 4, 2009 (The Canadian Press): Organizers of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi have assured "foolproof" security for the event in the wake of a terrorist attack on Sri Lanka cricket team in neighbouring Pakistan.

Tuesday's attack in Lahore, which killed six police and injured seven members of the Sri Lanka team, raised questions about security for sporting events in the region, with next year's Commonwealth Games among the most prominent.

Adams Lands IOC Role

March 4, 2009 (The Sport Briefing): The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has appointed Mark Adams as its new director of communications. Adams, 45, will take up his new position at the end of May, and joins the IOC from the World Economic Forum in Geneva, Switzerland, where he was managing director and head of media and communications.
