Steward: Livermore duo looks for World gold in 'acro"

May 14, 2009 (Berryessa Sun): Finding the right partner is crucial to any successful collaborative venture, and that was never truer than for Kristin Allen and Michael Rodrigues in the fast-growing sport of acrobatic gymnastics. They might seem mismatched at first. Allen is just 16 while Rodrigues is 26, and Michael is more than a head taller. But in "acro," as it is commonly referred to in the gymnastics world, they discovered a special alchemy that made them international-class performers. In October, Allen and Rodrigues took the silver medal in the mixed pairs competition at the Acrobatic World Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, missing the gold by less than three-hundredths of a point. In April, they were silver medalists again at the 2009 Acro Cup in Albershausen, Germany.

International gymnastics dispute complicates matters for MOC

May 14, 2009 (Times of Malta): With less than three weeks before the start of the 2009 Games of the Small States of Europe, the Maltese Olympic Committee is facing a dilemma on whether to field a women's team in gymnastics following an international dispute between the Cyprus Olympic Committee and the International Federation of Gymnastics (FIG).

Young gymnasts spring into action

May 13, 2009 (Evening Times): Glasgow’s star gymnasts of the future will get a taste of the limelight next week at one of the city's top sporting events. A dozen primary schoolgirls have been chosen as helpers for Team GB at the Glasgow Gymnastics Grand Prix in the Kelvin Hall. They will march the team in to the arena to mark the beginning of the competition, which takes place this Friday and Saturday. This year's British line-up is the strongest ever, with five 2008 Olympians competing.

Conduite par la présidente de la Figpt, Margeret Sikkens Ahlquist, cette délégation a pour mission, indique-t-on, de former des formateurs sénégalais, algériens et cap-verdiens. Ces derniers devront descendre à la base pour, à leur tout, faire la promotion de la discipline.

Rhythmic Gymnastics / From Russia with grace

May 13, 2009 (Ha’aretz): A little over a dozen years ago, there were twin girls growing up in the Buzovski household in Petah Tikva - Moran and Sharon. The two girls, who were five at the time, were looking for something to do in the afternoon, after kindergarten. Their mother suggested a class in gymnastics and the girls started weekly lessons.

Now, some 15 years later, Moran is about to compete for the first time in the senior European Championships, which will be held later this month in Baku, and she describes herself as addicted to the sport.

Azerbaijan Gymnastics Federation (AGF) Vice President spoke in an exclusive interview

May 12, 2009 (Trend News): The 25th European Rhythmic Gymnastics European Championship will take place in Baku on May 15 to 17. As many as 186 gymnasts from 132 countries will participate. Azerbaijan will be represented by senior Aliya Garayeva, Anna Gurbanova, Zeynab Javadli and Samira Mustafayeva (reserve) and also junior team which includes Sabina Abbasova, Nigar Abdulsalimova, Evgeniya Zhidkova, Aelita Khalafova, Kamila Mammadova and reserve Lala Maharramova.

Bhavsar Begins New Role as Athletic Ambassador

May 11, 2009 (International Gymnast): 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Raj Bhavsar (U.S.) said he is thrilled over his recent South Asian Excellence Award, and remains committed to being an ambassador of sport for India, host of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Bhavsar, a first-generation Indian-American of Gujarati descent, received the award Saturday night at a gala held in New York City. The South Asian Excellence Awards, first established in 2008, honor distinguished South Asians in several categories, such as business, entertainment, science, literature and sports.

The National Gymnastics Championship ended without the participation of the stars

May 11, 2009 (GR Reporter): The National Sports Gymnastics Championship ended in the sports hall “Mikra” in Thessaloniki. Vasilis Maras, Lefteris Kosmidis and Vasilis Cholakidis were not present at the competition and Dimitris Markousis easily won the title with 85 200 points.

Start of the National Gymnastics Championship

May 8, 2009 (GR Reporter): During next weekend 9 – 10 May, the attention of the Greek sports society will be focused towards Thessaloniki, where in Mikra hall will be held the national gymnastics championship for men, women and youth. The championship in Thessaloniki will determine the competitors in the Mediterranean gymnastics championship for men and women, which will be held in Pescara, Italy.

IOC Addresses Madrid Concerns Over 'Rotation Policy'

May 11, 2009 (The Sport Briefing): President of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Evaluation Committee, Nawal El Moutawakel, has declared that she is “most impressed” with Madrid’s venues and reassured the city that the IOC does not employ a rotation policy for Games bids. The Evaluation Committee concluded its visit to the Spanish capital on Friday as it continues its assessment of the four bid cities for the 2016 Olympic Games.

WADA: Remaining sports fall in line

May 8, 2009 (ESPN): The last five Olympic sports that had failed to fully comply with global anti-doping rules have now fallen into line, ensuring their presence in the Games. Gymnastics, wrestling, volleyball, handball and modern pentathlon have met World Anti-Doping Agency requirements by starting out-of-competition testing programs, WADA director general David Howman told The Associated Press.
