Gale blows away the opposition as Bulmershe shine

October 30, 2008 (Getwokingham): Bulmershe Gymnastics of Woodley continued its remarkable surge as this country’s standard bearer for aerobic gymnastics, a sport widely perceived as the most dynamic and energetic of all gymnastic disciplines. At the 2008 British Championships held at Fenton Manor in Stoke-on-Trent earlier this month, gymnasts from Bulmershe were on fire.

Russian athletes take Gold and Silver medals home

Two Gold medals for Russia

KAOHSIUNG (TPE), October 28, 2008 (KOC): First day of Gymnastics Pre-Event for The World Games 2009 ended with two victories for 17-year-old Russian Vice-World Champion Natalia PICHUZHKINA, who dominated the Hoop as well as the Rope competition. Both silver medals were awarded to Aleksandra ERMAKOVA (RUS). PEI-LUNG Yu, competing for Chinese Taipei, won the bronze medal in the Hoop competition.

Illinois gymnastics coach resigns amid police probe

October 27, 2008 (Chicago Tribune): Jon Valdez has resigned after eight years as a University of Illinois men's gymnastics coach amid a university police investigation into allegations of possible misconduct by Valdez, sources said.

Assistant athletic director Kent Brown confirmed Monday that Valdez had left his job Oct. 17 for "personal reasons," but Brown would not confirm that Valdez was being investigated.

FIG Goes Heart Healthy With Defibrillators

October 27, 2008 (International Gymnast): The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) is instituting a rule requiring defibrillators to be present at all of its competitions. The rule, established at the recent FIG Congress in Helsinki and announced Monday, will be in place for all FIG events, including World Cup competitions. Defibrillators send electrical jolts to the heart, potentially saving the life of someone who is in cardiac arrest.

Can I see some ID? Gymnasts will need license

LAUSANNE (SUI), October 27, 2008 (International Herald Tribune): Gymnasts will now have to start showing ID long before the Olympics. Beginning Jan. 1, all junior and senior gymnasts who represent their countries at most international meets will need a license from the International Gymnastics Federation. The licenses will include gymnasts' name, sex, country and date of birth, and be their proof of age for their entire career.

Olympic all-around champion Liukin wins "Athlete of the Year" in gymnastics

BEIJING (CHN), October 27, 2008 (Xinhua): American Olympic champion Nastia Liukin won the award of "Athlete of the Year" in gymnastics, as the FIG statement said on Sunday.

The president of FIG, international gymnastics governing body, Bruno Grandi announced attribution of the "Athlete of the Year" award to Liukin, the Beijing Olympic champion in women's all-around last week in FIG's General Assembly in Helsinki.

FIG postpones deadline for trampoline 2009 World Cup bidding

BEIJING (CHN), October 27, 2008 (Xinhua): The deadline to bid for organizing 2009 World Cup competitions in trampoline, aerobic and acrobatic gymnastics had been pushed back to the end of the year, FIG, the governing body of international gymnastics announced on Sunday. Andre Gueisbuhler, FIG secretary general, announced the decision after the General Assembly of FIG last week in Helsinki.

7th European TeamGym Championships 2008

October 25, 2008 (UEG): After Jyväskylä FIN, Odense DEN, Birmingham GBR, Chalons en Champagne FRA, Dornbirn AUS, Ostrava CZE, the UEG had entrusted in 2007 the organisation of the 7th TeamGym Championship to the Gymnastics Federation of Belgium, which ensures the preparation and running of this event together with the Flemish Gymnastics Federation and its president Rik Dombrecht.

World Games Pre-Events open with dance performances in Kaohsiung

KAOHSIUNG (TPE), October 29, 2008 (The China Post): The World Games 2009 Pre-Events Series of athletic contests kicked off yesterday at the Kaohsiung Arena in southern Kaohsiung City. Mayor Chen Chu and Ron Froehlich, president of the International World Games Federation, jointly opened the sports events that will last until Nov. 6. Modern kinetic dance and traditional aboriginal dance were among the performances at the opening ceremony.

Tokyo 2016 commits to greener Olympics

October 28, 2008 (Sportbusiness International): The city of Tokyo has taken a global leadership position on environment and sustainability, adopting every environmental initiative put forward by planners at the C40 Climate Change Conference.

The move is a boost to Tokyo 2016’s plan to host the greenest Olympic and Paralympic Games in history. The conference, an international forum to discuss the measures needed to develop sustainable low-carbon cities, took place in Tokyo, and set out 13 areas of action that cities should take to address the risks of climate change.

The World Games 2009: Pre-Events

October 27, 2008 (IWGA): A press conference at the brand new Kaohsiung Arena marked the start of the Pre-Event Series, competitions which serve as a full dress rehearsal for next year's World Games. The Managing Director of the Kaohsiung Organizing Committee, Mrs. Liu Shyh-Fang announced that the ticket sales for Pre-Events in gymnastics and korfball exceed 30,000 already.

Kaohsiung City to promote World Games in Hong Kong

October 25, 2008 (CNA): The Kaohsiung City government will hold a news conference in Hong Kong Saturday afternoon to promote the 2009 World Games, scheduled for next July, and a warm-up event that will start Oct. 28, a local official said late Friday.

Canada to host the 8th World Conference on Sport and Environment

October 23, 2008 (IOC): Today marks the registration launch for the 8th World Conference on Sport and the Environment (WCSE). The event will be held from 29 to 31 March 2009 in Vancouver, host of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Organised jointly by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Vancouver 2010 Organising Committee (VANOC), in close partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the conference will bring together representatives of governmental and non-governmental institutions dealing with sport and the environment, the United Nations system, universities, as well as the Olympic Family.

2016 Evaluation Commission: dates of visits to Candidate Cities

October 23, 2008 (IOC): As from April 2009, the IOC Evaluation Commission will visit the four Candidate Cities bidding for the 2016 Olympic Games. The visits will be carried out by the Commission from 4 to 7 April in Chicago (USA), 16 to 19 April in Tokyo (Japan), 29 April to 2 May in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and 5 to 8 May in Madrid (Spain). The Commission will spend four days with each bid committee.
